Hanging File Folder

I have been working on this for a while and it took me some time to understand how to make it... but I REALLY love it!

My HANGING FILE HOLDER
I'm using it for my children homework and school papers

This was a BIG project so it may take a few reads to understand how to make it...if anyone has questions please let me know. (I tried to make this post reader friendly, hope you'll understand)

HOW TO:

Start with 1 yard of fabric
iron on interfacing to the back of the fabric (this will give it the thickness you will need to hold papers/folders/etc)

***I hope this will make since, I'm going to color code the description to better help.***

cut into 3 equal strips - long rectangles (3 - 13 X 42)
first strip will be color coded RED
second strip will be color coded BLUE
third strip will be color coded GREEN1 of the large strips set aside (this will be the back)

the second cut into 4 equal parts 4 - 13 X 9 (this will be used for the pockets of the folders)

the third cut into 4 parts (1 - 13 x 15 ) & (3 - 13 x 9 )

Take the 4 folder pockets (13 x 9) and sew edge down on one of the long sides of each rectangle, see below (this will be the top of the pocket)

OK, bear with me this is where it will get a little tricky.

take the large square (13 x 15 )
one pocket folder (13 X 9)
and 1 small rectangle (13 X 9 )

Place the pocket folder on top of the large rectangle matching up the edges (make sure the finished edge is in the middle (remember this will be made into a pocket)

Then take the small rectangle and place it upside down (showing the interfacing) on top of the folder pocket again match up the edges, pin and sew straight line, remove pins.

NOW read carefully - unfold the small rectangle to show the fabric (see below)

Take a folder pocket (that has a finished edge) and place it on top of fabric, showing the fabric. Make sure to place the sewn edge on the middle of the creation. Match up edges of the small rectangle that is attached to the rest of the fabric.

take a small rectangle and place it upside down (showing interfacing) on the pocket folder, pin and sew straight edge, remove pins.

unfold small rectangle and repeat same steps above for 3rd & 4th pocket
3rd pocket folder place on top of small rectangle, fabric showing, then take a small rectangle and place it upside down (showing the interfacing) now pin and sew straight edge, remove pins.
unfold small rectangle and place 4th pocket folder place on top of it showing fabric.
DO NOT Sew....yet

Take the long rectangle (remember you placed one of the first strips aside.)
Place the long rectangle upside down on top of the creation you have been working on match up the bottom edge and sides (this will be a little longer than the creation you have just sewn together, it's ok it will be cut off at a point soon). Now pin the bottom together ** remember to be careful you still have a pocket folder that was not attached yet so make sure you match up those edges too.

Are you up to this point? Everything should be attached together if not go back and re-read the instructions to find out where something was missed.

now to attach 2 more sides. When you pin the edges together make sure you have the fabric laying flat and that you attach a pin to each area where there is a pocket to make sure it lays down right when the creation is complete.

From here remove the pins, cut off the extra edge of fabric. Take the creation and turn it inside out (which will make it the right way, now showing the fabric and the pocket of the hanging file folder. Fold in top edge to complete the finished look and pin down to sew the edge, repeat all the way around the entire hanging folder.
Doesn't it look CUTE! I love it already and it's now finished. At the top corners use ribbon for it to hang on hooks. Now your are finished! Hang on hooks......I can't wait to use it. I hate clutter from backpacks and projects so now there is a place for it all to be (and OFF my counters, YES!!)

Paper Flowers

Lots of paper and time....caught up on DVR shows =)

Repurposed Belt...you'll never guess what it's made from.

Can you see what the belt is made with?Missing my little model this week, she's visiting Mimi & Grandpa.

How about now?Soda pop tabs. This took about 60 tops. If you want to attempt to make it measure the ribbon 2 times around the person for the extra ribbon to be used to tie on, if there happens to be extra cut off to your desired length.
Time to make 1 hour ~ cost $2 ribbon. plus all the sodas...yummy!

Girls Bulletin Board

More decor for my little girls room

Old bulletin board covered with old fabric that had batting (that I started to make a small quilt but didn't like the way it turned out, so reuse but hide it!)

Flowers from my wedding boutique, Brown ribbon, pink buttons from my collection, and pink brads cut the backs off the hot glued everything down.

Don't look to close I originally thought I was going to make the board like the girls quilts but realized I didn't have enough scraps to make it cute. Therefore that's why there is a cut in the fabric. Thank goodness the girls don't mind and things will cover mom's mess up.

Time to make 45 minutes ~ Cost just the pink brads $2 had everything else at home, but my guess if you didn't have the thing on hand $15

Composition Book

(split notebook into 3 sections. Used one of the notebook pages and covered front and back of it with scrapbook papers, added tab)

I clear picture frame on its side.

Cost $1 each (frame, had the scrap papers on hand) ~~ Time 10 minutes

mail box bag

My girlfriend and I have been racking our brains to come up with some ideas for her daughter for girls camp for her secret sister. This is what I came up with.


Things you need:
decorative paper to cover mail box
2 - 12x12 papers (to assemble the box)
2 eyelets
ribbon
glue

Cut a 1 - 12 x 12 paper in half
Mark edges:
1/2 inch for glued edge
7 inches for large side (front/back of box)
4 inches for small side of box
1/2 inch for glued edge

mark and fold to create the box

Mark 2 1/4 inches from bottom up to create the bottom of the box
Mark and fold
cut up on the folded marks (up to 2 1/4 inch mark)
on one side of the 6 x 12 paper cut off the edge (shown below)

On the opposite edge of that same 6 x 12 paper make small cut on the outer side of the paper 1/2 inch in.

On the short side of both papers find center and attach eyelet

feed ribbon thru the eyelet and tie off. (I used tape to hold down since it will be covered by some paper).
To create flap for door - - take second 12 x 12 paper and cut strip, 12 x 7 (maybe a littler smaller to fit inside the 7 inch (large edge) to create the flat that is used for the door.
cut 2 - rectangles 4 x 5 1/2 (to be used on the small sides where the eyelets will be used)
cut half circles on top of the shorter edge to create the round edge for the box.

take both papers and cover eyelet with small edge of second paper. Attach with glue. Do same thing for the other side and the small edges (1/2 inch edges - See pictures below)

To attach bottom fold in small edges, glue then large edges. This will create a solid bottom.(picture of door flap)

added small piece of ribbon to use to pull open the flap. (attached with stapler)

And that's it so cute, fun but a little challenging to make. I think next time I might just use the bottom of a cereal box or cracker box and cover with paper. =)
Cost = nothing had everything on hand ~ Time to make: 1 1/2 hours. I really had to think this one out to make sure it turned out the way I wanted it too.
